A promising start

Last month I recommended Inside Story. Metajournalist Margaret Simons reports that it is off to a successful start:

Yet despite getting almost no publicity Inside Story – which is free to read – already has 1837 subscribers, and around five and a half thousand page views a week. ¶ What’s more, a number of it’s major articles have been picked up [and republished] by the mainstream media.

Interestingly, and unlike a certain high-profile US blog-magazine, Inside Story pays its contributors for their work,

…on a sliding scale. Less for salaried academics, and rates for freelance journalists that aren’t laughable.

That’s an interesting approach. Simons notes that the cash is available thanks to university sponsorship of the project. I’ve argued before that such partnerships are the future of journalistic blogging, and the early success of Inside Story is a good omen.

Simons’ Crikey-sponsored blog, The Content Makers, is also worth bookmarking — “better, in fact, than Crikey itself”, reckons Virginia.
